GDC Transfers Are Continued Custody

A Burke County detainee who receives a state felony prison sentence may leave Burke County Jail and enter GDC custody. The local jail roster can then stop showing the person, but that change is a transfer between custodians. It is not proof that confinement ended. Once GDC accepts custody, the statewide correctional record becomes the main source for facility location and release information.

A later GDC release can lead to the community, parole supervision, sentence discharge, or another authority. A detainer is a request from another agency to receive or hold the person. Georgia may release someone to that detainer, sometimes called a conditional transfer, while custody continues elsewhere. Always read the status and destination together.

Confirm a GDC Release

Use GDC Find an Offender for anyone who entered Georgia state corrections. It is not the right source for a routine Burke County bond-out.

1. Proceed through the GDC terms screen.
2. Search by first and last name, GDC ID, or other offered identifiers.
3. Match the result by identity details, offense, and sentence facts.
4. Open the detail record and note the exact status, facility, release date, and sentence fields shown.
5. Check the Parole Board tools if parole timing or post-release parole applies.
6. Request written verification when the result is ambiguous or date-sensitive.

GDC cautions that its public information may be incomplete and directs users to verify through written correspondence with Inmate Records and Information. A common name alone is not enough. Save the GDC identifier and compare it with the sentencing record from the Burke County court.

GDC Records and Contact

Public search results are convenient, but written verification is the stronger route for a disputed or exact state record. Include the full name, GDC identifier, date of birth when permitted, sentencing county, and the specific release field or status needing confirmation.

The Burke sheriff remains the source for the earlier county booking and transfer record. The Burke court clerk holds the sentence and disposition. GDC controls the later state custody record. Keeping those documents separate prevents a county transfer date from being mislabeled as a prison release date.

Georgia State Corrections Scope

The Georgia Department of Corrections is a statewide prison system, not one Burke County facility. No state prison was confirmed as physically located in Burke County in the reviewed sources. The local relationship begins when a Burke County defendant is sentenced to state confinement and transferred from the county jail.

Many county jail bookings never become GDC records. Pretrial detention, a local sentence, or release on bond remains a sheriff and court matter. GDC becomes central only after state custody begins. Its offender photo, when available, is a state offender image and not necessarily the Burke County booking photograph.

GDC Release Dates and TPM

GDC public material refers to a release date. Georgia parole sources use a separate term: Tentative Parole Month, or TPM. A TPM is the month when the Board completes final review and may set a parole release date. It is not a promise and is not the same as a confirmed discharge date.

Use the TPM lookup before a possible parole release. The Board can advance, delay, cancel, or reconsider a tentative decision. Conduct, programs, sentence rules, offense category, detainers, and Board review can affect timing. Georgia does not apply one simple release percentage to every state prisoner.

GDC Parole or Discharge

Parole releases a person from prison to serve the remaining term under community supervision. Discharge ends the controlling sentence or correctional obligation reflected by the record. A max-out release occurs when confinement ends by sentence expiration rather than a discretionary parole grant. These outcomes should not be merged.

Use the Georgia parolee search after a parole release. Compare parole begin and end dates and identifiers when available. For a person still incarcerated, use TPM only for tentative parole timing. Eligibility does not guarantee release, and Board public meetings are not inmate-by-inmate release hearings.

Burke Supervision After GDC

The Georgia Department of Community Supervision handles field supervision for felony probationers and parolees. Burke County is served through the DCS Augusta field office, not a Waynesboro-labeled field office. The listed office serves the Augusta Circuit, Burke, and Richmond.

DCS is not a prison release archive. It becomes relevant after release when parole or felony probation applies. A supervision record does not replace the GDC release date, and GDC does not replace the court sentence that created probation.

Burke Corrections System Context

Burke County connects to larger Augusta-area justice systems. The DCS office is in Augusta, and court paths also connect with the Augusta Judicial Circuit. A search limited to Waynesboro sources can therefore miss state custody and supervision records.

It does not confirm any person's release. Exact state release information still belongs to GDC, the Parole Board, DCS, or the receiving authority.

Resolve Burke GDC Record Conflicts

When the county transfer date and GDC admission date differ, keep both. They can mark separate processing steps. The Burke sheriff can verify when local custody ended, while GDC can verify when state custody and placement began. The sentencing order supplies the legal authority connecting those events.

If the public offender result conflicts with a court record or an older saved result, send a focused written inquiry to GDC Inmate Records and Information. Include the GDC ID and identify the exact status or date at issue. Do not ask the county jail to correct a state record. Likewise, a GDC result cannot correct the Burke booking sheet.

After a parole release, compare the GDC status with the parolee search and DCS supervision route. Each record may update on its own schedule. Agreement across the state sources provides a stronger release history than a single roster change.
